MESH workshop reports
Over the course of the MESH project, a series of workshops were held for partners and other experts as a means of knowledge sharing, generating new advice and guidance on data processing in a standardised way. The workshop contents and findings are described in the reports below:
-
Intercalibration Workshop
Date: 20-23 September 2005
Location: Brest, FranceSummary: The objective of the workshop was to bring together partners across Europe to employ their surveying tools, interpret data and produce shallow-water maps in similar ways. Best practices and standardised protocols were developed by comparing adequacy of results from all the survey methods in a big discussion at the end of the workshop.
-
Backscatter Workshop
Date: 30-31 March 2006
Location: University of Ulster, Northern IrelandSummary: This workshop aimed to assess the understanding among geo-physicists, geologists and biologists of the information content of multibeam echo sounder backscatter and it’s use in delineating areas of the seafloor based upon the acoustic signal and inferred geological and biological facies and habitats. Discussions provided evidence of successful and uncertain classifications and while several different automated classification approaches were presented, the key to useful classification still appears to rely on ground truthing, empirical knowledge of the area being survey and user intervention in classifying areas.
-
Sub-tidal Workshop
Date: 30-31 January 2007
Location: Marine Institute, Galway, IrelandSummary: The key objective of the sub-tidal workshop was to bring together biologists, geologists and geophysicists with experience of conducting deep water mapping surveys, to discuss the technologies and methodologies available for habitat mapping in deep water. From this, MESH could apply lessons learned and best practices to upcoming deep-water surveys.
