This interactive mapping portal is a free resource for viewing and downloading seabed habitat maps in European waters. It contains broad-scale predicted habitat maps and detail habitat maps from surveys.
The broad-scale predicted habitat maps are produced by the EMODnet Seabed Habitats project (part of the European Marine Observation Data Network, EMODnet
). A consortium of international partners
, led by the JNCC (during Phase 1 of the project, 2009-2012) and by IFREMER (during Phase 2, 2013-2016), developed data layers and thresholds to allow the modelling of habitats according to the EUNIS
During Phase 1, predicted habitat maps covering 2 million square kilometres in the Celtic, North, Baltic and western Mediterranean Seas were created. These maps will be updated during Phase 2, and the coverage will be extended to all European Seas.
Data layers needed for the model include seabed substrate, energy at the seabed, biological zone and salinity at the seabed. These are combined to produce EUNIS habitat maps for the entire region. Confidence layers are also produced to demonstrate the level of certainty across the study area.
The detailed survey maps of seabed habitats contained in this portal cover western European waters, specifically the project areas of the EU-funded MESH
(2004-2008) and MESH Atlantic
(2010-2014) projects: France, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, UK, Belgium and Netherlands. The habitat maps from surveys have been translated into a common classification scheme (the European Nature Information System, (EUNIS
), and combined.
EMODnet Seabed Habitats, as well as producing EUNIS broad-scale modelled habitat maps of European Seas, will continue to gather existing detail survey habitat maps from all European Seas.
